Oxford
Contrary to appearances, Oxford is not all dreaming spires, champagne in punts and cobbled streets. Beneath the ivory towers are families struggling to survive in overpriced rented accommodation plus one of the largest groups of rough sleepers outside London.
A foodbank would be a creative way to make use of food that would otherwise go to waste.
It would be good for local businesses wanting to reduce the cost of waste going to landfill.
And it would be good news for those living in food poverty.
So it's win ... win . win! The sooner we can get up and running, the better for everyone.
Thankfully, lots of people seem to agree. We have the support of the city council, community groups, supermarkets, and lots of individuals. In a recent "feedback" study by the council, 93% of local residents said they would support the idea of a foodbank in Oxford.
Do you know of a suitable venue? Somewhere big enough to store the food before it is redistributed to member projects, easily accessible by road, and if possible with built-in refrigeration. If so, contact us with your suggestions.
